Chautla Castle is located approximately 100 km from Mexico City. The estimated driving time is 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, and the Valquirico Medieval Village is 30 to 40 minutes.
The Chautla Castle and the Medieval Village of Val’Quirico are two tourist destinations near Puebla, Mexico, that, despite their different origins, offer unique experiences full of charm, architecture, and a sense of escape into the past.
Chautla Castle, located in the municipality of San Salvador el Verde, Puebla, began in the 18th century as an agricultural estate founded by Miguel de Eustaquio de Llano y Valdés. In the 19th century, his grandson, Enrique de Aragón, built a beautiful neo-Gothic English-style residence—commonly referred to as a “castle.” This estate was ahead of its time, featuring its own hydroelectric plant, making it one of the first properties in Latin America to have electricity. Today, it serves as a recreational park with a lake, gardens, outdoor activities, and cultural events.
In contrast, Val’Quirico is a modern residential and tourist development built in the 21st century on the remains of the old Santa Águeda Hacienda, located in the state of Tlaxcala. Although it looks like a medieval European village, Val’Quirico is inspired by architecture from Tuscany and Spain. It has no colonial or pre-Hispanic past, but its design intentionally creates the atmosphere of a historic village. With cobblestone streets, plazas, murals, and rustic buildings, it has become a popular destination for photography, fine dining, themed events, and weekend getaways.
These two places offer different kinds of journeys into the past: Chautla, with its authentic colonial and Porfirian heritage, and Val’Quirico, with its artistic recreation of a medieval European world.
