Flourishing between 100 B.C-400 A.D, it covered over 2,000 acres and had around 120,000 inhabitants making in the largest city in Mesoamerica and the most important city for trading. Later in the day, a relaxing ride through the canals of Xochimilco a two hours from the archaeological site. From the Nahuatl language meaning “Place of Flowers,” is one of the most iconic and vibrant neighborhoods in Mexico City, located about an hour from the historic downtown. This colorful area has a history that dates back to the times of the great Tenochtitlán, when it was an important site due to its location on freshwater and the development of chinampas—ancient floating gardens. Today, Xochimilco is a popular tourist destination thanks to its famous trajineras, brightly decorated boats that cruise through the canals, offering an experience that perfectly blends nature with festivity.
