Mexican lucha libre is a sport-entertainment that combines physical combat, acrobatics, and theatrical storytelling. It is known for its colorful masks, high-flying moves, and the clear division between técnicos (heroes) and rudos (villains). More than just a sport, it is a deeply rooted cultural expression in Mexico, with iconic figures like El Santo and Blue Demon who became national legends and even starred in films. Matches often include singles, tag teams, or trios, and special events where masks or hair are wagered are highly significant.
Just 30 minutes from the arena, you’ll find Plaza Garibaldi
Plaza Garibaldi, also known as the Mariachi Plaza, is a landmark in the Historic Center of Mexico City, located in the Colonia Guerrero neighborhood. Its origins date back to pre-Hispanic times as an indigenous settlement, later becoming a colonial marketplace. In 1871, it was named Plaza del Baratillo, and in 1921, it was renamed Plaza Garibaldi in honor of José “Peppino” Garibaldi, a revolutionary of Italian descent who fought in the Mexican Revolution.
Since the 1920s, Garibaldi has become the main gathering place for mariachis from across the country, especially from Jalisco. Iconic venues like Salón Tenampa, founded in 1925, helped shape this musical tradition. Over time, other genres such as romantic trios and regional music joined in, turning the plaza into a symbol of Mexican popular music.
