San Juan Market, located in the Historic Center of Mexico City, has roots that date back to pre-Hispanic times, when the area was part of Tenochtitlán. During the Aztec era, the site where the San Juan Market now stands was part of a complex urban network with canals, causeways, temples, and commercial spaces. Although it wasn’t a formal market like the one in Tlatelolco, it was used for local trade, food distribution, and the transit of merchants.

The current market was built in the 1950s, originally as a traditional market offering local products. During the 1980s and 1990s, it began transforming into a key destination for chefs and food lovers due to its selection of exotic and hard-to-find products.

Today, it is a cosmopolitan and culinary destination that attracts both tourists and foodies looking to try something different. It has become a culinary hotspot that combines the traditional with the exotic.

FIRST STOP :

EXPLORING THE EXOTIC MARKET

Our first stop will be the San Juan Exotic Market, the only one of its kind in all of Mexico City, where you can find everything from insects to exotic meats such as lion and shark.

We will walk through the aisles, starting by tasting a fruit cocktail to prepare yourself for a unique, traditional, and exotic experience.

SECOND STOP :

STARTING THE TASTING

Walking through the gastronomic corridor, between the exotic market and the last local market, we come across a space dedicated to exotic cuisine. There, we will begin our tasting of Mexican antojitos, with a wide variety that you can choose from.

It can be:

Arrachera tacos with Toluca-style chorizo, recognized with a Michelin distinction.
Barbacoa tacos (available only on weekends).
Cochinita pibil.
Tacos al pastor.
Traditional tamales.

Or there are more options you can choose.

To accompany our meal, we’ll savor a fresh and delicious fruit drink from La Michoacana, and we’ll end this culinary experience with a rich pozole inside the Mercado de San Juan.
