Hotsprings Tolantongo Private Tour (With transport)

The Tolantongo Caves are located in Cardonal, Hidalgo, about 200 km (4 hour drive) from Mexico City. This natural destination is known for its thermal river, turquoise pools, caves, and steam tunnels, all set within a canyon surrounded by mountains. The thermal water of Tolantongo comes from underground springs heated by contact with hot rocks inside the mountain. It mixes with cold water, forming pools and a turquoise river, creating a natural attraction for tourism.

Originally named Tonaltongo, meaning “House of the Sun” in Nahuatl, the name later evolved into Tolantongo, often interpreted as “place where it feels warm,” referencing its hot waters. In pre-Hispanic times, the area was inhabited by Otomi and Nahua peoples who viewed the site as sacred, although no major settlements were established.

In the 1970s, the local San Cristóbal Ejido chose not to sell their land to private companies. Instead, they organized a community-run tourism project, creating a sustainable model that protects nature while providing direct economic benefits to the local population.

Today, the Tolantongo Caves are a successful example of eco-friendly tourism and community-led resource management in Mexico.

OVERVIEW

This is a private and personalized tour only for you and your love ones. The total duration is 13 hours and taking the transfers time. This tour includes private transport, pick up and drop off at your address in Mexico city, your tourist guide/driver, entrances to hotsprings for 1 day, 1 bottle of water and 1 bag of snacks per person. After 4 people the vehicle is a new van with air conditioner.

Your guide will contact you before pick up time. The pick up will be at your accommodation address. You can choose the pick up time from 5 am to 6 am. Our recommendation is 5 am

The estimated travel time from the main lodging areas in Mexico City is approximately 4 hours, although this may vary slightly depending on traffic conditions. Throughout the journey, scheduled stops can be made for restroom breaks, to purchase drinks, snacks, or souvenirs. If you need to buy essential items for your stay, such as water shoes or other supplies, there are plenty of shops available along the way and at the destination.

The full experience includes access to the thermal area, time to swim inside the grotto, a walk through the tunnel, and plenty of time to relax by the river, making it perfect for enjoying the natural surroundings. During your visit, you are free to have breakfast or lunch at the restaurant of your choice.

Yes. A private tour only for you and your special people. At this moment We don’t have groupal tours.

-What type of vehicle?

At this moment We are a small growing agency. Our agency has 1 new vehicle 2025 + 3 new vans 2024. So when the tour is from 1-3 people the vehicle is a car (it can be our new vehicle or the vehicle of your guide). We use a van or minivan after 4 people.

-Is My guide the same driver?

Usually if the tour is for 1 to 3 people the guide is the same driver. After 4 people We use a van with 10/13 seats or minivan for 7 passsengers. Usually in minivan is the same guide the driver.

-Have the guides a certification?

Our team is made by local guides, lovers of our culture and destinations. They have a lot of experience in our tours: driving & the story. OF COURSE SOMETIMES WE WORK WITH CERTIFICATE GUIDES. WHEN THE CUSTOMER REQUEST FOR A CERTIFICATE GUIDE WE CAN DO IT (WITH EXTRA COST)
