Tepoztlan is located in the north of the state of Morelos, approximately 82 kilometers (equivalent to about 51 miles). The estimated driving time is between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours from Mexico City, we find the magical town of Tepoztlán, whose name comes from the Nahuatl language, meaning “place of copper” or “place of metal” (tepoztli = metal/copper, tlan = place).
Before the Spanish arrival, Tepoztlán was an important settlement inhabited mainly by Nahua and Otomi peoples. Its main hill, Tepozteco, hosts a temple dedicated to Tepoztecatl, the god of pulque (a traditional alcoholic drink) and agriculture, showing the religious significance of the site. This temple is believed to have been built around the 15th century during the Mexica (Aztec) dominance, who culturally influenced the region.
In 1521, following the fall of Tenochtitlán, the Spanish began their conquest of the territory, and Tepoztlán was soon evangelized. During the colonial period, the community preserved many indigenous traditions and maintained a strong communal organization.
In 2002, Tepoztlán was officially designated a “Pueblo Mágico” (Magic Town) by Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism, recognizing its cultural, historical, and natural richness. Today, it is a popular tourist destination that preserves its traditions, colonial and pre-Hispanic architecture, and is famous for its natural surroundings like Tepozteco Hill and its springs.
