Taxco de Alarcón, located in the state of Guerrero, is one of the oldest and most historically rich towns in Mexico. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word Tlachco, which means “Place of the Ball Game”, a reference to the ancient Mesoamerican traditions that thrived in the region long before the arrival of the Spanish.
Today, Taxco blends this pre-Hispanic legacy with a unique colonial heritage, known for its cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses with red-tile roofs, its renowned silver craftsmanship, and the iconic Santa Prisca Church.
From the late 17th to early 18th century, the town experienced great economic prosperity thanks to its silver mines, which to this day earn Taxco its reputation as one of the silver capitals of the world.
Today, Taxco is an impressive tourist destination, officially recognized as a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town), offering a unique blend of colonial architecture and breathtaking natural surroundings. It’s the perfect place to stroll through charming streets, shop for handcrafted silver, and enjoy a relaxed, culturally rich atmosphere.
