Cacahuamilpa Grottoes Private Tour with Transport

12 Hours

The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, located in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, are among the most impressive cave systems in the country and the world. They are situated approximately 180 kilometers (about 110 miles) south of Mexico City, making it a drive of around to 3 hours, depending on traffic and the chosen route.

These caves began to form millions of years ago, as underground water slowly eroded the limestone rock, creating vast chambers, tunnels, and formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. This type of geological formation is known as karst.

The caves consist of enormous underground halls adorned with natural mineral formations that, over time, have taken on surprising shapes. Many of these formations have been given popular names based on their appearance, such as “The Cathedral,” “The Throne,” “The Gorilla,” “The Skull,” and “The Organ.” These shapes are the result of mineral deposits slowly accumulating over centuries, sculpting the rock into remarkable natural figures.

Long before modern exploration, the caves were already known to indigenous peoples such as the Chontales and Nahuas, who regarded them as sacred spaces used for rituals and spiritual ceremonies linked to the underworld. Although local inhabitants were aware of the caves, it wasn’t until 1834 that Colonel Manuel Sainz de la Peña made their “official discovery” and reported them to the scientific community. From that point on, the caves attracted the attention of explorers and naturalists, especially from Europe.

In 1936, President Lázaro Cárdenas declared the site a National Park to protect its natural, historical, and cultural significance. Since then, the caves have been carefully adapted for tourism with guided tours, safe pathways, and strategic lighting that allows visitors to appreciate their beauty without harming the environment. Today, the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa are not only a major tourist attraction but also a protected site, where efforts are made to balance ecological conservation with the promotion of their natural and cultural richness.
